Prince Albert is to preside at the meeting of the

Society of Arts to be held on Thursday next, for the purpose of conferring the honours of the Society on those who are accounted to have been successful in practically promoting arts and manufactures. The works for prizes are said to be unusually numerous and meritorious; the number including some important improvements in decorative manufactures and handicrafts.

It is mentioned as a satisfactory circumstance, that the Cambria steam-ship departed from Liverpool yesterday, for America, without any specie on board,— the first vessel in which that has been the case for several months.

Great part of the work-shops comprised in the manufactory of Messrs. Maudslay and Field, the engineers, in the Westminster Road, was%lestroyed by fire, early this morning. The fire was discovered by a Policeman about one o'clock: he raised the alarm; the workpeople belor.ging to the factory hastened to assist; Mr. Braidwood and the Fire Brigade galloped to the spot; and every effort was mode to subdue the flames. But there was a lack of water, and the u tmost that could be done was to confine the fire to the range of buildings in which it broke out. About half-past three o'clock, fears that the flames would spread were set at rest. The buildings destroyed are, the carpenters' shop, the boiler-shops, part of the pattern-lofts, and part of the forge-shops. It is said, however, that it will not be necessary to stop the works; and that the loss is covered by insurance.
