In the western theatre of the war the event of

the week has been the great effort of the French to take the sugar refinery at Souchez. This building, or, rather, block of buildings, had been turned by the Germans into what can only be described as a fortress. It was carried by an impetuous French attack on Tuesday. On Wednesday, however, the Germans assert that it was retaken by them ; but this statement is apparently only one of those half-truths which are the subtlest form of falsehood. The Germans did retake it, but it was again taken by the French, and as we write is declared to be in their hands.
