Sir Harold Wilson

Sir: Sir Harold Wilson is to lead a commission investigating matters in the City. He should be a good choice for this particular position.

Looking through the pamphlet put out by the Government (and endorsed by the two other parties) before the referendum, one finds hardly a paragraph which does not now show up as being inaccurate and misleading. There is evidence that before June 1975 certain waters of the Common Market were 'fished out,' whereas conservation measures undertaken by us in 1964 had proved effective. No wonder the Common Market was eager for access to our more profitable zones. As matters stand at present, by 1982 other nationals will be able to fish right up to our very shores. None of this was so much as mentioned before the referendum.

The case for a 'Yes' vote, as put forward, was a false prospectus. The City frowns on such goings-on. Flogging shares in nonexistent gold mines can involve 'a stretch inside.' But in politics anything goes. Hence the 'universal contempt' in which politicians are now held (Spectator, 12 February).

Perhaps there should now be a similar inquiry into the 'unacceptable face' of politics.
