Awfully clever

Sir: Your funny television critic Richard In- grams says I am an awful man because I us- ed to contribute to the Forum magazine — 'and for all I know he still does' (26 February). This would put me in some splendid company.

During the eight years I edited Forum (having had no connection with them for the past three years), I was happy to publish articles not only by Mr Ingrams's best friend and Spectator columnist Auberon Waugh, but also by such dreadful dross as Simon Raven, Christopher Hitchens, Leo Abse, Chad Varah OBE, Irma Kurtz, Larry Adler, Sally Vincent, Laurie Taylor and Erica Jong. Jeffrey Bernard agreed to do pieces until he heard they were 2,000 words long.

I am awful, of course, but would hate to be rich in ignorance as well.
