Israel's responsibility

Sir: Christopher Hitchens (19 February) denies that the fuss about Israeli complicity in the massacres of Sabra and Chatila has anything to do with anti-semitism. He pro- tests too much. Why is there so much fuss about the Jewish Israelis who were not directly responsible, and so little about the Christian Lebanese who were, or about the Muslim Syrians who were responsible for the massacre of Hamm, or about the Muslim Palestinians who have been respon- sible for many acts of terrorism, or about the Christian Americans and Communist Russians who have given aid and comfort to the various protagonists? No doubt the Israeli invasion of Lebanon was abominable, but wasn't the Syrian invasion of Lebanon before it, and the Palestinian occupation of much of Lebanon before that, and so on? What is so suspicious is the consistently one-sided condemnation of commentators like Christopher Hitchens.
