THE PETROL TAx.

It is just as well, perhaps, that the effect of the Petrol tax upon certain industries should be clearly comprehended, and Lord Ebury did well, therefore, when addressing the share- holders of the Army and Navy Co-operative Society, Ltd., at the recent annual meeting, to. emphasize the fact that the expenses of the Society would be increased very greatly by the new tax. He contended that one reason for the continued prosperity of many retail concerns is to -be. found in the enterprise they have displayed in extending their field of operations by means of motor delivery service. This policy, he maintains, will receive a severe check if the contract price for petrol is increased by 50 per cent.—" as it will be in the Society's case by the proposed tax."
