Sir: Anthony Howard's telephone difficul- ties (Diary, 31 March) remind me of my early days in Lagos where the combination of delightful pidgin and literal interpreta- tion prevailed. After several attempts I finally heard the ringing tone, 'Is Mr Eluka there?"Yes, sir,' then plonk as the receiv- er was replaced.
