Lord Midleton delivered an address at Edinburgh OR Wednesday on

the subject of "National Service and National Character." To-day the State from a hard taskmaster bad become a wet-nurse. "Our children, as they grow up, are taught not to consider what they can do for their country, but what their country can do for them." Lord Midleton went on to say that surely some "still, strong man" will be found to tell the parents : "We have at a cost of close on £50,000,000 annually taken off your shoulders the burden of each child for ten or twelve years of its life ; we demand in return at least as many months of State service." Lord Midleton ended by declaring that though we cannot reproduce the hard conditions which made our nation, we can organise national life OR imperishable lines by insisting on every individual doing the share of national service for which he is most fitted- Lord Midleton is a, most welcome recruit to the policy of national service.
