Polish preferences

Sir: The Spectator for Poles who love intellectual freedoms (and political ones of which they are at present deprived) is a marvellous idea. Timothy Garton Ash and you have shown imagination, understand- ing and intellectual loyalty. So, Auberon Waugh is a thousand times right, and Mr Neal Ascherson a thousand times wrong. Moreover, he displays all the characteris- tics of the typical 'Waugh nanny' in ex- pressing unsolicited views as to what is good for the Poles and what is not. Precisely the kind of view the Poles in Poland resent so much in their present circumstances.
