Our Workhouse Million, by George F. Bonsor (Efficiency Magazine Ltd.,

87 Regent Street, W. 1, 5s.) is a plain, straight- forward account of the work of guardians and relieving officers who are dealing with distress in this country. The writer is extraordinarily balanced in his point of view. The anecdotes which he uses are almost equally divided between those which do credit and those which do discredit to the unemployed, and although Mr. Bonsor has as much admir- ation of independence as anybody, he still is harder upon those who sneer at the unemployed than on the indiscrim- inately charitable. His suggestions are simple and thorough- going without being harsh.
