NEWS OF THE WEEK.

THE Wednesday and Thursday before Easter were critical days in the great battle in France. On the Wednesday, after a successful British counter-attack between the Ancre and the Somme south of Albert, the enemy developed a very heavy offensive on the whole Allied centre from Lassigny northwards to Boyelles, near Arras. He forced the French back on Montdidier, and entered the town next day. Ho pressed back the British line south of the Somme, and to the north of Gornmecourt he got a footing in Ablainzeville, but despite his violent efforts he could not move a yard westwards from Albert.
