When the first successful rush of the Germans against the

Fifth Army was announced, critics began to say that after all the recon- naissance work of the airmen had not helped us so much as had been expected. Later information has changed this opinion. The first German attack was delivered in a dense mist. It was one of those occasions, much less frequent at this time of year than in the autumn and winter, when everything is shrouded from the most vigilant eyes aloft. Since then the low-flying aeroplanes with their sprays of machine-gun bullets have greatly delayed the advance of the Germans by manceuvres which are as ingenious as they are daring.
