HALIFAX BUILDING SOCIETY.

Very interesting was the review of the affairs not only of the Halifax Building Society but of the general Building Society movement which was given by Sir Enoch Hill, at the recent meeting of the Halifax Building Society, and of which a resume appeared in last week's issue of The Spectator. In dealing with the general problem of Housing, Sir Enoch wel. comed the Housing Act of last year as calculated to put an end to housing subsidies, but he also expressed the view that the attitude of the Ministry of Health in urging local autho- rities to build dwellings " which are known by the unwhole. some name of ' flats ' was wrong, his firm belief being that single family dwellings should be provided and that children especially should not be confined to the floor area of flats. At the same time, the Directors of the Halifax Building Society are known to have taken an active and sympathetic interest in the Government plan to provide a large and adequate supply of small houses to let at low rentals within the reach of the poorer paid working classes.
