Abortion

Sir: Dr D. M. Jenkins (March 23) admits that the abortion operation "isn't particularly dangerous" — which is true. So why should not the decision about it rest with the patient and her doctor, instead of with the law? If drugs were found to be completely harmless (which most are not) then they would not be subject to legislation either. Indeed, on these grbunds, some us believe it is high time that cigarettes were subject to legislation. If Dr Jenkins fought his battles about road accidents, smoking and atmospheric pollution, then he would have much support from responsible citizens. Instead he wastes his time trying to interfere in their private lives, where the law has no place.
