Scots and Celts

Sir: While I can share Mr Angus Maude's dislike of Scottish Nationalism I must protest against his use of the terms Scots and Celts as if they were synonymous (Notebook, March 23). He appears not to know that most Scots are not Celts but are far nearer the English in outlook and way of life than they are to the people of the Highland fringe. A Scot like myself feels more at home in an English village than in a Highland community. Indeed the attraction of the Northwest Highland country for many of us is that it presents a greater contrast to our Lowland way of life than anything we find in this island. It is of some significance that the Church of Scotland which is staunchly presbyterian is on more friendly terms with the Church of England than with the small presbyterian bodies which dominate parts of the Highlands. In fact, strictly speakng, most of us Scots are Sassenachs i.e. not Highlanders.
