Cliché

Sir: I have read with interest Andrew Brown's thoughts on the miners' strike and the descriptions of his David Attenborough-like visits to the primitive village of Hemsworth (Sack to what?' 9 March). I am sure that many raised self- gratifying smiles at the discovery that ferrets are still common, both in Yorkshire and in patronising middle-class character- isations of the north of England. And, no doubt, many had their thoughts or hopes confirmed by Mr Brown's quaint descrip- tions of the foul-mouthed, non-Spectator- reading churls who inhabit such simple mining villages.

I myself have lived in Hemsworth for 18 years and am glad that the strike is over, as life will be able•to return to normal; that is without the patronising presence of super- cilious hacks like Andrew Brown.
