Point grasped

Sir: I am sure I am not alone in beginning to get rather irritated by the increasingly acrimonious slanging match engaged in by Mr Rupert Allason MP and Mr Joe Haines in your Letters column (30 March). To paraphrase one of your correspondents from a few weeks ago, I know and care lit- tle about either of them. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the parties in Allason v Haines, I fail to see the necessity of each airing the other's dirty linen in public like this. It makes for astoundingly tedious reading in what is otherwise an excellent magazine. Your readership at large must surely have grasped the point (such as it is) of all this by now, namely that they detest each other. Why do they not just cease their pettifogging and settle the matter with pistols at dawn in Hyde Park?
