Both Houses of Parliament adjourned on Wednesday until November 15th

after the Royal Assent had been given to several Bills, including the Accession Declaration Bill. Just before the adjournment there was a rather undignified dispute in the House of Commons as to whether the Lords' amendment to the Small Holdings Bill should be agreed to. The Lords' amendment, of which we entirely approve, altered the date up to which application for compensation could be made from September let to November 1st. An attempt was made by a few Radical and Labour Members to refuse agree- ment ; but, as it was realised that such a refusal would involve the loss of the Bill, the amendment was at the last moment accepted. When will people learn that nothing is more futile and undignified than to grumble and swear when you mean in the end to give way?
