Babes and sucklings
Sir: Andrew Brown, in his article about incest in Sweden (23 July), says that the estimates of a ten per cent incidence of this vice appear to be derived from studies done in the USA, Readers might well take note of the unfortunate case of the wife of a very close friend of mine over there, who for years has been telling anyone who will listen that her father sodomised her at the age of one. This poor woman, now 42 years old, has been in and out of mental hospitals for eight years. She has a whole collection of lurid tales about her family's past, all of them either demonstrably untrue or highly improbable. But the extraordinary thing is that the tale about sodomy is universally accepted by their middle-class university- educated contemporaries, despite the fact that it rests solely on the unsupported testimony of a one-year-old!
