The rate for the job?

Sir : I am surprised at the SPECTATOR'S parochial views on the monarchy.

You say (15 November) it is a pity the Queen has not decided to replace her Christmas Day message to the Com- monwealth by one `to her own people—the people of Britain.'

Here on the other side of the world is a country whose traditional leaders ninety-five years ago invited Queen Victoria to become their Queen. The people of this country have ever since maintained a deeply felt and very real loyalty to the British Crown.

The people of Fiji are the Queen's people too.

This will be clearly demonstrated—if it needs demonstration—when we welcome her next March on her third visit to us.
