Two senses

Sir: Peter Quince's remarks (30 January) on the sounds and silences of nature were interesting to read. It always strikes me that the two senses of hearing and touch receive poor treatment from us all because we cannot voluntarily shut them off. They are constantly with us and hence we have to use them selectively because we cannot ab- sorb consciously all the informa- tion they give us.

I wonder if any of your readers have tried a simple test of their hearing faculties.

When you are alone in quiet sur- roundings, take a pen and paper and sit down for a period of three minutes, noting down every single sound that you hear, however small- or commonplace. It may be more interesting if several people do the test at once and compare notes afterwards.
