23) states that Christopher Britton, who won his appeaT on December 19, is 'the first person sentenced under the 1965 Race Relations Act.' He is not. He was convicted on October 17; on October 11, Tom Carroll and Ernest McDonald were convicted at Brighton Magistrates' Court under Section 7 of the 1965 Race Relations Act, which extends the provisions of Sec- tion 5 of the 1936 Public Order Act, and were fined £20 each with three guineas costs (after spending nine days remanded in custody) for using unspecified in- sulting words at a demonstration in Brighton on October 2.
