to express my thanks to the many readers of The Spectator. — some unknown to me, but too numerous to thank individually — who took the trouble at this busy season to write, telephone or leave messages over Christmas at the Evening Standard following Will Waspe's most unselfishly expressed hope that my recent eye infection would not cut short my career as a film critic. My doctors have assured me that it should not.
