Fighting back

Sir: The degree of ignorance displayed by your diarist (30 December) in his ramblings concerning me and the Daily Mirror over the Royals' Christmas day service is breath- taking. In case it needs spelling out, as I'm told it might, Chancellor has completely missed the point. The public — as many who wanted — were allowed into the San- dringham church grounds to wander where they wanted.

I do not read The Spectator as assiduously as your contributors clearly read my fine newspaper. But if this is an example of Alexander Chancellor being on top of his craft I can understand why he was recently writing on the subject of being unemployed.

He's obviously in the middle of a lucky streak. I hope it extends into the New Year.

I've just telephoned a 'friend' of Alexan- der Chancellor. He tells me that he has `hopped around lately doing a number of journalistic jobs, regularly demonstrating he can't quite cut the mustard'.

I can understand this.
