Railway Wages There is substance in the case made out

at the annual Conference of the National Union of Railwaymen this week, that the cuts imposed under the stress of 1931 should be restored. The demand is to some extent Strengthened by the fact that the Government, with the improvement in revenue, has been able to restore half the cuts to the State employees. The decision must be governed by the extent of improvement in railway receipts. Whilst it is fair to recognize that the wage- earners who have experienced cuts have a first claim, the position of shareholders (amongst whom are many poor people) has also to be remembered in a final adjustment.
