Abortion rates

Sir: What an absurd fellow your Dr Linklater is! He talks about the "soaring abortion rates" — though the British abortion figures have hardly changed for the past three years. What has soared is the number of foreigners coming here for abortion. In 1970, 10,000 came. In 1971, 30,000 came. In 1972, more than 50,000 came.

Where did they come from? Not from permissive countries served with Brook clinics busy corrupting our young with information about birth control. No! They came instead from good Roman Catholic countries like France, Spain, Italy and Ireland, where Brook clinics are unheard of, but where (for some reason that Dr Linklater may be able to explain to us next week in your columns) abortion, VD and wickedness generally, flourishes far more luxur iantly than in these puritanical islands. The hideous truth is, as every demographer knows, that the abortion rate in Britain is one of the lowest in the world. If it was anything approaching the figures taken for granted by our Common Market neighbours, we would really have something to worry about! Haydn Lloyd Edwards Cumberland Avenue, Greenwich
