Clerical errors

From the Revd. Michael Scott Sir: Your note beneath my letter (June 29) omits Alan Paton's reference to the fact that the time spent away from my flock (the coloured people in Johannesburg) was spent in Durban gaol. I had gone to Durban late one night on an urgent call to witness violence being used by mobs of white Christian youths against Asian people protesting against a new discriminatory law against them. Being unable to secure police intervention after several days, I joined the people protesting, though the place where I stood was not prohibited to Europeans. When released after two months in gaol I returned to Johannesburg but received a letter from the Bishop saying my license would be cancelled, unless he received the undertaking you mention, as well as my salary.

So the phrase "deserted his flock" used by the Dean of Peterhouse in his review is not a truthful description of that happened and is rendered if anything more injurious by your partial editorial note. I shall be glad to have the matter referred to the Press Council for their view.
