State Papers concerning the Irish Church. By W. Maziere Brady,

D.D. (Longmans.)—This volume contains a number of letters

addressed to the Home Government by various Irish officials, lay and ecclesiastical, during the period 1563-1593. Most of us have an idea that the condition of Ireland at that time was utterly lawless and disorganized, but these documents fill in the picture with some

extraordinary details. On the whole, we are inclined to think that there was more reason than his contemporaries probably supposed in the sug-

gestion made by one of the writers that the Irish bishoprics should be given to capable soldiers. Dr. Brady would have done better to lot the documents speak for themselves. As it is he will inevitably excite the suspicion, doubtless unfounded, that they have boon manipulated or selected for a purpose.
