* * * In the French Chamber on Thursday, May

28th, M. Painleve, answering attacks from the Socialists and Communists about French policy in Morocco, justified the advance beyond the river Wergha which was made last year. The point of the criticisms had been that Abdel Krim was not really the aggressor as the French move had cut off one of the chief Riffi sources of supply. M. Painleve with his explanations of the numerous provocations which Marshal Lyautey had received succeeded in satisfying the whole Chamber with the exception of the Communists. He read several proclamations by Abdel Krim inciting the Moors in the French zone to revolt, murder and pillage. He went on to say, as we learn from the Paris correspondent of the Times, that the object of the present campaign was " to protect Fez."
