LORD'S IN WAR-TIME "

SIR,—On a day when the Germans were flooding Crete with airborne troops it is not surprising to read that the pavilion at Lord's was full, " the red tabs of the higher Staff glowing from a distance." Though cricket must bear its share of responsibility for making this country what it is, since the enemy does so many things that are not cricket our Staff officers might have been better employed looking at a street-corner fight, at " all-in " wrestling or some other pastime more analogous to modern war. But perhaps these were all welfare-officers!
