Arms against hijacking

Sir: The recent hijacking has once again called into question the ability of security services to provide adequate scrutiny of passengers to determine that they are not armed before boarding an aeroplane. Quite apart from its apparent inefficiency, the business of baggage and physical checks is irksome and time-consuming. Perhaps the authorities might give consideration to en- suring not that no one is armed but rather that everyone is armed, by issuing every adult passenger with a revolver in much the same manner as oxygen masks are provided when necessary at the discretion of the pilot and senior steward. Even the hardiest ter- rorist would quail at the prospect of facing a jumbo jet occupied by fully-armed passengers.
