The death of Lord St. Aldwyn on Sunday last, which

followed with tragic suddenness on that of his only son, who was killed in action only a few days previously, removes one of the ablest and most respected of Conservative statesmen. His Parliamentary career began fifty-two years ago. He sat for more than forty years in the House of Commons, and was twice Chief Secretary for Ireland, Secretary for the Colonies, President of the Board of Trade, and twice Chancellor of the Exchequer. A man of strong character, great industry, and considerable practical sagacity, he was placed in a difficult position by his adherence to Free Trade, and was not included in Mr. Balfour's Government in 1902, but as one of the " Elder Statesmen " he exerted considerable influence in the House of Lords.
