donnish twins, one of whom is up to his neck in secret bacteriological-warfare stuff; the donnish detective, Appleby, falsely bearded and bespectacled; and a donnishly dotty bird-watching nobleman—all in a silly, readable, thriller-fantasia. Mr. Innes writes like an angel and plots like poor Poll.
