—Here we have yet another of the volumes which are intended to make the preacher's work easy. "In the following pages it is attempted," says the compiler in his introduction, "to give the essence of the best homiletic literature of this generation ;" and he proceeds to give a list of " works consulted," a list which reaches to fourteen pages, and must contain not far off seven hundred works. There is a vast amount of industry expended on these books, but we cannot think that it is wholly for good.
