in memoriam

Sir: You may be aware of the formation of The Airey Neave Memorial Trust, under the sponsorship of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Lord Chancellor, the Prime Minister, Mr Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition, the Archbishop of Westminster, the Irish Ambassador and others.

To date, the amount of £8,919.19 has been banked for the Trust, but only recently has the Trust been officially registered as a Charity. The Charity Number is 278606. Covenant Forms and Standing Order Mandates are available from the Secretary, The Airey Neave Memorial Trust, cio The House of Commons, London SW I .

It is intended that the Trust will provide scholarships for research into the extent of personal freedom under national laws, with the results of such research in all probability being published. Contributions have been received from people in all walks of life from this country, from Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic, and from overseas. Some have sent anonymous donations. Others have asked that in order to save postage their contributions should not be acknowledged. May we through your columns thank all who have contributed so generously and swiftly to the appeal, which will remain open.
