Something must be done

From Mr Joe Roeber Sir: It is not merely legitimate, it is necessary to look for the reasons why terrorists chose to bomb US targets, from large generalities (ways of life) to smaller specifics (support for Israel). The answers may or may not imply criticism of past policies and suggest changes, but neither is mandatory. I have not heard anything from the fascist lefties of Christopher Hitchens's outraged imagination (The fascist sympathies of the soft Left', 29 September) to suggest that the United States deserved what it got and thousands dead are a just retribution for its sins. Even the most radical of America's domestic critics have stopped well short of that. And while there is, quite properly, a lively debate over what is to be done, nobody has suggested that the grievously injured country should do nothing.

From Miss Julie Burch ill Sir: All my life I've defined my politics by my hatred of the USA above all else; 11 September turned me triumphantly and shamelessly around. Christopher Hitchens is my hero.

Still, I knew I was right about the Soviets in Afghanistan; like the democracies in Spain, we could have stopped them there. Never mind; here's to the USSA.
