[TO THE EDITOR OP THE "SPECTATOR."] SIR,—In observance of the sound principle—palniam gut meruit ferat !—it seems due to the memory of one of Canning's collaborateurs to mention that Matilda's "sudden thought" (cited in the Spectator of August 30th) was the original conception of John Hookbam Frere, who had a hand in the production of many of the most notable poetical contributions to the Anti-Tacobin.--I am, Sir, &c.,
