Making the Russians go home

Sir: The Foreign Secretary, Mr Michael Stewart, MP, has asked me to draw your atten- tion to a passage in the article 'How to make the Russians go home,' which appeared in the SPECTATOR Of 30 August.

The passage concerned reads: 'By all accounts Mr Stewart, in private, went further, complaining of the intransigence of the Czechs before the Cierna meeting.'

Mr Michael Stewart does not hold the view attributed to him in this passage of the article. It follows that he has never spoken in public or in private of 'the intransigence of the Czechs before the Cierna meeting.'
