The death of Lord Carnarvon at Cairo, on Thursday, after

a painful illness, seems almost too bad to be true. The whole world had felt something of the excitement, the " thrill " of his greatest of all " finds " ; and now for all of us this piece of great human good fortune has been utterly spoilt and wrecked. Lord Carnarvon lived indeed to see the harvest of his life work, but not to enjoy it. It is too hard a lesson for us to learn. It is for his family and for his very many, very near, friends that the deepest sympathy must be felt.
