At Messrs. Sotheby's on Tuesday the manuscript of Alice in

Wonderland was sold to Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbach, of Philadelphia, for £15,400. Dr. Rosenbach then announced that he would sell the MS. to a British buyer at the same price. It is a question whether £15,000, available for some artistic purpose, might not be even more usefully spent than on rebuying Alice, though we heartily agree that England is the only proper home for that immortal Victorian child.
