We have received papers from Port Nicholson, in New Zealand,

to the 1st May, and private letters have been received to the 4th. They resent a very satisfactory picture of the progress of the colony. The inhabitants had.received their new charter, and learned their inde- pendence of New South Wales. A dinner to commemorate the event was given at Barrett's Hotel; Colonel Wakefield, the New Zealand Com- pany's Agent, in the chair.
