The English team's result in the inaugu- ral world team championship at Lucerne proves that we are now definitely in the medal club and will, I hope, stay there. The record has been a consistent one: bronze in the European team cham- pionship at Skara 1980; silver in the 1984 Olympics at Thessaloniki and now bronze again in the 1985 world team cham- pionship. Yet it would be hard to say that the team members were all on form Short had been exhausted by his exertions In the Montpellier Candidates, while Nunn and Speelman seemed almost equally fati- gued, having functioned as seconds in the same tournament. Tony Miles certainly shone, though, and with 5/7 picked up the silver medal (ahead of Karpov) for his performance on board one.

. It is a sign of the English team's strength HI depth that none of them scored less than 50 per cent, and bronze handsomely justi- fies Duncan Lawrie's continued and gener- ous support of our team's international World Team Championship, Lucerne, 16-26 November

forays. Thanks are also due to the ever- supportive Duncan Lawrie for the recent purchase of a substantial chess library which will help to form the basis of a comprehensive reference system, if ever we succeed in establishing a National Chess Centre.

The real hero of the championship was Viktor Korchnoi, who convincingly cap- tured the individual gold medal for board one with the score of 71/2/9. Significantly, Karpov ducked out of the USSR- Switzerland match, preferring to save his energy for the vitally important match against Africa next day.

Here are three of Korchnoi's games: Korchnoi-Qi (China): King's Indian Defence.
