The new learning

Sir.—Not another letter from Mr J. H. K. Lockhart (January 24)! I would hope by now that the least perspicacious of your regular readers are familiar with his views on the new learning since he makes the same points in every letter he writes on the subject. Before he writes again, and certainly before you publish again, I hope Mr Lockhart will take the trouble to learn, 'new' or 'old' I care not which, the difference between subjective and objective language, and between emotive and descriptive presentations of his argument. Until he does so, he is a poor representative of any kind of learning.
