Sir: F.R. Leavis would surely have seized upon John Bayley's article about the

Archers (Books, 17/24 December) as an instance of the slack standards which pre- vail at Oxford. Professor Bayley refers to one Florrie Grundy. She exists in neither fiction nor fact. He must mean the splendid Clarrie Grundy, she of the plan to twin Ambridge with Paris — an idea which might indeed do more for European union than anything that John Major has yet pro- posed.
