The calamities of Lancashire would be coming to an end

if the Surat cotton were at all like the American, or even the Dharwar cotton, which is quite as good. As it is, it is said that it comes to hand so dirty that it positively affects the health of the operatives, and gives out a fostid smell,—and so rotten that no quantity of it can restore the trade. Surely it is a strange thing that the Government of India cannot take measures to extend to other parts of India the simple measures --..„which have produced in Dharwar (no peculiar soil or climate) a :cotton quite equal to the New Orleans.
