Yet it will be remembered that in framing his Budget estimate, and when facing the prospective Deficit for the current year on the former existing basis of taxation, Mr. ChaMberlain ' expressed thankfulness that he had this great source of new revenues to turn to, failing which he implied that a fresh burden might have had to be placed upon the direct taxpayer, although it is now a fairly general belief that the burden has become almost in- supportable. Accordingly, the Chancellor estimated that from these new duties he would receive no less a slim. than 'about 136,01:9,000 during the current year, but little was said with regard to the prospect of further cuts in the National Expenditure.
