General Grant has been elected the next President and Mr.

Schuyler Colfax the next Vice-President of the United States by the votes of twenty-five States, while nine States went for the Democrats Mr. Seymour and General Blair. The Democratic States are New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Oregon, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana. Three States—Texas, Mississippi, and Virginia—did not vote, not having accepted the terms of Congress. All the other States voted for the Republicans, including the Southern States of North and South Carolina, Florida, and Arkansas, and the Border States of Missouri, West Virginia, and Tennessee. In the "Electoral College," as it is called, General Grant and Mr. Colfax received 206 votes, and Mr. Seymour and General Blair 88 votes.
