Tammany has won in New York, its candidate, Mr. George

McClellan—the son of the famous Northern General, and a Democrat—being elected as Mayor by a majority of nearly sixty-four thousand votes. Mr. McClellan, though himself a man of sound character, is unfortunately entirely in the power of Tammany, and it is to be feared that for the next two years the city will be administered by men who will not merely fail to repress, but will actually encourage the worst evils of a great city. It is, however, always dangerous for outsiders to criticise when party passion is as much involved as it was in this election, and we shall therefore only quote the comment of the New York Evening Post, a Democratic paper. "It was in essence a triumph of evil men ; hell was stirred up from beneath."
