Sir: Congratulations on Taki's splendid piece on the facts of

life of leasehold (High life, 31 October). As he quite rightly says, many of the long-term residents of the cen- tral London estates have been driven out already, but I feel I should mention that others hang desperately on and, in fact, form a considerable part of our member- ship. It was precisely on the 'Adolf Eich- mann' aspect of the management of these estates (alluded to by Taki) that our organi- sation came into being.

If anything is to be salvaged of the resi- dential heritage of central London, the coming legislation needs to be thought through on a basis that enables people to stay in their homes as part of organic com- munities with the full age range — and not consisting solely of short-stay prime-earn-
