NEW CALEDONIA IS FRENCH

[To the Editor of THE SPECTATOR]

Sta,—In the second paragraph of " A Spectator's Notebook " inyourissue of September 23rd, it is stated that one-tenth of the world's supply of nickel comes from New Caledonia which is described as a " Franco-British Condominium." This is incorrect. New Caledonia is a French colony, having been annexed in 1854.

Perhaps the writer of the note had in mind the neighbouring archipelago of the New Hebrides, which is a condominium.—
